100x30 #10: GEOMETROPOLIS
Presented by OneHouse Arts, an experimental children’s art school spanning San Gabriel Valley and Orange County, California.
A new year calls for new explorations of the time-old shapes that built the world around us! Shrink yourself tiny and wander the kooky playful alleys of our geometric metropolis – inspired by the majesty and magnificence of civilizations from the ruins of ancient Greece to the skyscrapers of Manhattan.
From January 1st to March 31st, OneHouse Arts Gallery in Monterey Park will feature an array of 3D assemblages – sculptures and collages – built in collaboration among artists ages 6 to 14. Imagine yourself climbing over, squeezing around, and ducking under glittering castles, playful robots, fantastic animals, asteroid space-junk, and more!
As the 10th installment of OneHouse Arts’ 100×30 Children’s Art Show Curriculum, GEOMETROPOPLIS is the product of open-ended lessons exploring the transition from drawing in 2D to constructing 3D shapes. Utilizing math and engineering, creativity and problem-solving, our students cut and fold flat 2D shapes (nets) into 3D objects. By combining these shapes and recycled educational toys, young artists design stable structures, experiment with materials, and prototype functional models.
While the classes may have involved cutting and pasting, there’s nothing “cut-and-dried” about these creations. Reflecting the curious and diverse imagination of young minds, this miniature metropolis goes beyond the limitations of reality. Perhaps you’ll accept the invitation to step in and journey through their landscape. Look closely, or you might bump into something!
