OneHouse ArtExperience Family Museum

Temple City, CA

The OneHouse ArtExperience Family Museum is an experimental museum that reimagines what a creative environment can be. The museum, located inside the home of Rachel Guan Rong, artist and founder of OneHouse Arts, is an immersive domestic landscape for imagination, exploration, and artistic thinking.  Every corner is intentionally designed in collaboration with children and inspired by the educational philosophy of OneHouse Arts.

The museum features a variety of interactive installations that encourage open-ended play and artistic discovery. A felt wall invites children to arrange colorful textile pieces into animals, abstract forms, and imagined worlds, supporting storytelling, pattern recognition, and an understanding of shape and composition. Paper mâché sculptures create an engrossing hands-on installation that children can stack, arrange and design together. Throughout the museum, wall mounted display boxes with dioramas of found objects and everyday artifacts encourage children to explore relationships between color, texture, form, and memory. Original wall paintings and murals, many developed from children’s own ideas and OneHouse Arts lessons, blur the boundary between artwork and architecture, allowing the building itself to become a canvas. Even the ceiling is an imaginative landscape, where suspended toys, handmade paper forms, natural objects, and collected trinkets create an ever-changing overhead installation.

One of the most strikingly original spaces with the OneHouse ArtExperience Family Museum is the Line Room, where hundreds of bold, hand-painted lines in primary colors cover the walls, ceiling, furniture, and architectural surfaces. Rooted in contemporary art and installation, the Line Room allows children to experience lines as movement, direction, rhythm, structure, and space. Instead of simply learning to draw or observe lines, children begin to understand that art is something we can inhabit, explore, and experience with our entire body. Every step invites new discoveries about composition, scale, and spatial awareness.

The Interior Program

The OneHouse ArtExperience Family Museum serves as a research laboratory for a broader vision of designing environments that nurture creativity through space itself. OneHouse Arts is currently developing an Interior Program that brings these ideas into children’s bedrooms, homes, schools, and community spaces. Each environment will be uniquely designed around the individual child or group of children, using contemporary art, open-ended materials, and participatory installations to cultivate imagination, inquiry, and meaningful relationships with the spaces they inhabit.
